I Don’t Understand

I understand what I said was out of line speaking up
And out of line to come between you
And that I’m blank if I don’t speak up
And that I’m insane if I do
I don’t understand what you’ve been through
And that you need to hurt people to feel

I’m judgmental, someone else will understand you better

Because it’s not fair to expect me to understand.
It’s not fair to expect me to understand.
It’s not fair to expect me to understand.

How my trials are the color of damage and your trials are the color of art.
So when I sing and you hear caterwauling and when you cry and I hear wolf

I’d rather we’d be like trees in the woods
But you’d rather we flow into each other like rivers
You’d rather we die in each other’s arms
But I’d rather we live in tatters.

The poem displays a wealth of emotion that only comes with a deep understanding of human relationships and an unparalleled empathy. Kudos to the poet, who has maturity and wisdom beyond her years.

Profound for a young poet. Gives me insight into a world we often choose to ignore.
