The Millionaire
- a Short Story
- by Suman Mukherjee
He was poor and had been thrown out to break up on cold ground. He was hungry and on the verge of starvation. Human lives are always weighed according to their monetary status. He had none.
For Radheshyam, the simple act of buying food was so complex that he had already turned into skin and bones. The anxiety of hunger had stolen his appetite.
He could barely manage to walk in the forest. He was too weak and hungry to appreciate the brilliant wands of the trees wave in the arboreal air.
He sat under a tree when he felt something fall on his head. He quickly got up and was surprised to see a gold coin. He looked up.
The tree was laden with lumps of gold and even in the light of the setting sun they glittered, surpassing any masterpiece.
The millionaire smiled after a long, long time.
