The Gentleman

He was nicknamed the Gentleman. An officer of the Indian Police Service from the West Bengal cadre, Arijit Bagchi was always ready with a broad smile and kind words but with an inner worry of a police officer. Of late, gruesome murders had taken place in the city and he was under constant pressure from his superiors to nab the criminal.

‘Bagchi, fix this asap. Get the whole battalion near that graveyard. That’s where all the murders have taken place. Keep a watch 24/7′, his boss Virendra Jaiswal ordered.

‘Sure Sir. But we all know that the victims were all dreaded criminals. At least the killer is doing some service…’

‘Shut up, Bagchi. That’s for the courts to decide. Nab the fellow and do it fast.’

Bagchi saluted his boss, came out of the police headquarters and smiled.

He could always justify his sins of killing criminals with cold indifference.
