Love
- a Short Story
- by Ashmita Srivastava
“Mom! I won the first prize in the calligraphy competition.”, exclaimed Tara.
“That’s alright”, was the comment she got from her mother.
As a fourth-grader, Tara felt neglected by her parents, who were always busy.
They say, children are too sensitive and so was Tara. She came to the conclusion that her parents did not love her.
After almost a year, her mother quit her job and Tara got all the attention she had desired. But that feeling of distrust continued to remain with her and intensified over the years.
On the first day of Tara’s maiden job, she asked her mother, “Why did you leave your job? Didn’t you work very hard to get it?”
Her mother smiled and said, “Why, because of you, dear.”
Tara went speechless as the truth of the words hit her.
She had been so wrong her entire life.
