The Picture
- a Short Story
- by Suman Mukherjee
Naveen received his sister along with her son, Ankur, at the Shimla Railway station. She wanted to spend time with him, go around the place and get a glimpse of the snow-capped Himalayas.
Ankur, who was six years old, stayed back with his Mama, while his mother went to the Mall road to do some shopping. Naveen was watching TV, while Ankur was playing with his colour book. Suddenly, Naveen saw a shadow near the dining hall which quickly disappeared.
A chill ran down his spine.
He looked at his nephew and said, ‘Ankur, time for bed. It’s already nine.’
‘Look, what I have drawn, Mama,’ Ankur said handing over the colour book.
Naveen glanced at a gawky picture of a woman.
‘Is this your mother with such big teeth and long hair?’
‘No, Mama. It’s of the woman who was standing beside you all this while.’
“Mama” in Hindi refers to “Maternal Uncle”.
