The Photograph
- a Short Story
- by Suman Mukherjee
The black and white photograph was his treasure. It was clicked in the year 1920 on the day of his grandfather’s tenth birthday. It hung in its battered gold frame right in the centre of the wall of his study, trying to unmap his past and present memories.
‘Who is the old man standing behind grandfather?’ he had asked his grandma one day.
‘Oh! That is Mr. Mike Henkins. He was the personal assistant to the Viceroy. He was very close to your great grandfather. They were friends.’ she had remarked with pride.
He smiled and walked towards the other photograph hanging on the far corner of the wall. This was his present, clicked a few days ago surrounded by his family and friends celebrating his fiftieth birthday.
But the photo left a permanent mark of its own.
Mike Henkins was still standing there, now behind him!
