The Order
- a Short Story
- by Suman Mukherjee
The street which was abuzz with vendors and shoppers, a few days ago, was now a war zone. The young men who wanted nothing more than a decent life, fought tooth and nail against the dictatorial army of Rozalino, under the leadership of their rebel leader, Isagani. They ran at Rozalino’s army with homemade explosives, the response – an immediate chatter of machine gun fire.
Philippines was on fire.
Isagani, was caught and brought before Rozalino.
Rozalino smiled and whispered, ‘You need to die, Isagani’.
He ordered Nathaniel, a young lieutenant, ‘Shoot him’.
‘Yes, Sir’.
Nathaniel stared at Isagani and then sprayed the bullets on the old man. The blood started to flow freely from Isagani’s lifeless body.
Nathaniel walked towards the dead Isagani, sat down and started weeping.
‘What’s wrong?’ Rozalino asked.
Nathaniel wiped his tears, looked up at his boss and uttered, ‘The man was my father, Sir.’
