Social Media Woes
- a Poem
- by Gayathri Durairaj
Perched precariously in two worlds
We gleam and scream in online herds
Our heads lie firmly uneasy
But actions seem sure and flimsy.
I speak of the two lives we lead,
One actual and other, virtual feed
We survive pandemics in easier ways,
Than digest social media’s frays…
What began was for a good cause,
Connection, communication and news casts,
Halfway transformed into a demon
And made positives odd and negatives even.
Political or religious views, we don’t care,
We comment so fervently and swear,
We even distance ourselves from the people known
Or end up hurting a loved one.
Shaky and false are the facts
One is the truth and the other lacks tact.
What we warp, conjure in our mind,
Is the nightmare played online.
Online posts get different responses too
Bad comments outweigh the better few.
Pictures, photos get their quota,
But gain excessive negative propaganda!
