Onamatopoeia!
- a Poem
- by Vinitta Mathew
The orange light strewn by marigolds
The pinks clash with the purple
Vitrified tiles forever stained
The tamarind tree and my grandfather’s great swing
Meditative sways, delightfully numb bottoms
And no care in the world
The pompous raisin and dapper cashew
That didn’t last too long
The last slurp that led to the burp
Sunny golden discs
Baptized by bubbling coconut oil
My mother’s life line stained black
From plantain resin
The crunch that interrupted my
Midsummer dream
The Sambar’s tryst with the leafy vein
Colluding in the steamy rice
A brief affair but the love was never lacking
Let’s lay in the sun awhile cloaked in silk
To sleep away the torpor
Listening to the wind torn banana leaves
That took rejection quite well
The King jolted awake from his deep slumber
By the crackle of Papadams across time zones!
In this composition, the poet reflects on the celebration of “Onam”, a festival from the state of Kerala, in India. The title Onamatopoeia which is a poetic take on ‘Onomatopoeia’ was inspired from the various aural connotations that the poet relates to the word Onam. The many sounds of the festival.
