Freedom From Barnacles
- a Short Story
- by Gayathri Durairaj
‘Hope’ was the little boat that brought people illegally to Greece for years. But just as the people riding on it, it had to constantly endure the torture of the lascivious waves at sea. Damaged many times over in the thousands of treacherous journeys embarked, but dreams of freedom for many still seemed far away in the horizon.
One fateful night, a storm hit and ripped everything in its way. A debris of twisted metal and wood hurled into the vicious waters. ‘Hope’ was never seen by the Bay again. Lost at sea, unbeknownst and unseen.
They say, ‘A thing that is usually never claimed is never found!’
So, enslaved by the waves, the broken bits of the boat jounced for years. Its drenched self, bobbing at sea, was covered in barnacles.
‘Hope’ was one with the sea and had perhaps found its liberty!
But wait! A fishing boat arrived…
