Back Again
- a Short Story
- by Suman Mukherjee
She entered the dilapidated mansion quivering on her toes. It was empty and now in a state of ruin- the windows gaping holes for the wind to rush in and out through, as the rotting door hung on its hinges. Her son had relocated to the US and her husband had died long ago. There was no one now to take care of the once magnificent mansion, now in ruins, which was once her home.
She tip-toed inside the dark living room. The furniture was laden with dirt and dust, her husband’s favourite sofa still holding strong, where he used to sit and enjoy his cigar.
She entered her bedroom and saw her portrait hanging on the wall. She stood there for a while before coming out, wiping her tears.
She walked slowly towards the rusted main gate.
She always celebrated her death anniversaries at her home!
